I know the feeling... I am having it right now, with the book that just came out and everyone seems to love. What if that was IT?? And everything else is just a big disappointment?
Just breathe. And stay with what you are writing at the moment, without thinking of what has been or what will be. That's all I can recommend.
Dude... I know how that goes. 9 years ago (give or take a month or two), I wrote what I believe to be my definitive novel. Not the one I'm submitting (whenever I get around to finishing the editing process), but the one I put the most research into and which, I felt, had the most well-developed characters. Everything since then has felt like mere shadows. But, I feel that there have been a few winners... even though I couldn't produce a novel over 250 Word pages, which bugs me. But, once I finish the screenplay I started around 10:30pm last night, I can pour my heart and soul into expanding some of my older novels.
It's not so hard getting over the angst, though; and even when it feels hard, it's always nice to be surprised with one of those, "WOW" moments when you write something amazing, and hopefully you'll have many more! :D
I understand how that goes. Well, almost. I can't seem to bring myself to do a read-through of Divinity which it desperately needs. I keep thinking, ok, I know that, that, and that scene are pretty good. Probably only need a few touch-ups. But what if the rest of it is total crap?
It's usually beginning and prologues for me. I love my prologue scene for Divinity. But then I look through the rest, and a lot of it just doesn't seem to compare...
Also, as noted in my entry, this is tasllyn. ::waves::
