Okay, story...

First V happens.  Then X happens.  But in between V and X has to be enough time for Z to travel by foot overland to where C and J are so X (the event that will precipitate the midpoint reversal) can happen.  I had initially had W occur between V and X

Ok, so should the missing event happen to Z or to J and C? Can it be something deadly, like J or C almost dying? Are we as readers anticipating X? If so, can you make us fear it will not take place? Can you make something really, really bad happen to X, J or C? Can Z's progress be thwarted? Can someone unexpected show up?
I mean, I have no idea about your plot, so just fumbling in the dark here...

Aw, thank you for trying to help me even though I gave you next to nothing to go on. The thwarting thing might have worked, if I hadn't found the inexplicably blue passage on a copy of the story I didn't even know I had.
