GINEVRA DE' BENCI

I often find myself puzzled by this portrait. Not only because I am a huge Leonardo da Vinci fan - it's the lacing of her dress. One thing is that I've stumbled across this version twice - showing more of the lacing and dress than 99% of the other prints I've seen. There is a rather obvious fold (and also colour difference?) viewable where it's ( Read more... )

Hey. I realize that I'm quite late answering this... but I'm going to be in Washington in the next few weeks doing the tourist thing. I will try very hard to get into the museum and take a look, and note anything that I can see in person. I'm assuming no cameras (I've never been in a 'real' art gallery before'), but I will see what I can do :)

I know very little about fashion in that era, but from what little I know about lacing, I agree it doesn't make sense.

We shall see! (eerr or maybe I will :P)

I've been rummaging around the costuming people's lj's and noticed this post. It would seem to me that it is spiral lacing...though most people would have compensated for the pulling of the gown upward as seen in the painting by making the neckline uneven so that it does line up when laced together. Other than that ..I don't know why the dress was done that way. My two cents while passing through
