let me count the ways

well, everyone has some bad habits.  we come to love them anyway.  sort of.

a/n: and for a while, i meant six days? all right.  slowly sails across in her many ships. because i figured, why not.

it's a funny thing, wu fan thinks.

zi tao probably doesn't mean any harm when he does this, but he glares a lot.  he'll glare at wu fan when they're together in the bathroom in the mornings, he'll glare at his piece of toast (though, lu han's cooking can be pretty offensive sometimes), he'll glare at the television screen as if jay chou is doing something wrong by singing good songs.

maybe, wu fan reasons, it's a vitamin c deficiency.

"no," zi tao says a bit slowly, "i don't particularly dislike carrots."

zi tao also scrunches his nose.  "right," wu fan says.  actually, zi tao doesn't particularly dislike anything, which would be obvious in the way zi tao is curled up on minseok's lap and animatedly talking about stupid things.  really stupid things that wu fan himself is totally capable of talking about (all he needs to know is goo junpyo and he's good, right?).  frowning, wu fan looks out the window.

zi tao also makes wu fan feel uncomfortable with the many silences that fall upon them as they're the last to fall asleep in the car after a day of no progress.

yeah, wu fan thinks.  funny.

he breathes in slowly, and is out before he can exhale.

whenever zi tao's eyes aren't open, they're closed.

wait.  wu fan looks up from his sandwich.  that was the single stupidest thought he's had the entire day.

but, he tries to quickly defend himself, when zi tao's eyes are closed, it's like he's shut off the entire world and is off to the furthest end of the universe.  zi tao also falls silent in the middle of conversations and tends to look away when being addressed and wu fan doesn't want to admit it, but it really hurts.

"are you going to eat that pickle?" yixing says from somewhere and wu fan just waves his hand, shooing them all away.

"i'm gonna go."  zi tao gets up from the table with a half eaten bagel and shuffles into the living room, where lu han is asking jongdae, "and how do you say?" while concentrated on his phone.

he feels minseok watching him worriedly but wu fan refuses to look back.  because maybe minseok would be sharp enough to see the disappointment in his frown.

yixing quietly folds his shirt then says, "well, yeah, you're sort of sensitive."  wu fan tries not to be offended.  "i mean, that's a good thing.  but i don't think you should take all those things personally."  he pauses.  "i mean, remember how you were three years ago?"

yeah, wu fan tries not to think about it.  "it's hard."

"i know it is.  it's hard for him, too."  yixing clears his throat, bunches up his socks.  "but you're a good leader."

oh, sensible yixing.  "i guess i should just not let it get to me, then."

"exactly."  yixing firmly presses down on the green sweater wu fan had insisted on burning, for his benefit.  "no, you're not going to burn this sweater."

"but it's so ugly."

wu fan decides he doesn't mind much when zi tao picks at the fluff clinging to wu fan's sweater.  he treats it like it's his duty, wu fan thinks, and laughs when zi tao finds more loose strings to cut.

"what?" zi tao says, the first word they're exchanging for the day.  wu fan raises his brows a bit mockingly, just to see zi tao flustered and grumble, "if you don't want me to, fine."

"no, please," wu fan grins.  "i think you missed one."

lu han sits in the chair next to wu fan and swirls around in the chair as a lady tries to put on their face paint.  he smiles.  "good mood?"

closing his eyes, wu fan nods with a grin on his face, despite the deathly look the make up lady gives him.  yes, zi tao's smile has the power to make his day.

zi tao bites his lips when he cries.

it's something wu fan sort of wishes he hadn't seen because seeing zi tao on his bed, gripping the sheets with his lower lip caught between his trembling teeth sends a wave of utmost sadness crashing through him.

"zi tao," wu fan says slowly, "hey."

zi tao refuses to look up but he relaxes when wu fan puts his hand on zi tao's shoulder, and wu fan only hopes it's as comforting as he hopes it to be.  because it's a leader's duty to always be there for his members, or something stupid like that.  "tao."

"i miss my parents, ge."  zi tao rubs at his eyes, choking on his words.  his lips are red and his eyes are red, too.  "i miss them, and my friends, and―"

and maybe this is what yixing meant, wu fan thinks as he wraps his arms tightly around the younger boy.  seeing zi tao's face crumpled and dark and not happy or thoughtful or himself is horribly familiar and unsettling, and he'd like to do anything to stop this from becoming a habit.  wu fan takes a shaky breath and rubs zi tao's trembling back, whispering words he wonders make any sense.

"um," zi tao murmurs.  "i feel better, thanks."

zi tao smiles wonderfully with his puffy eyes.  wu fan can't help but kiss him on the top of his head.

"we're always here for you," he tries to say, but zi tao is hugging him back so quickly he barely has the time to take a breath.

"hey," wu fan snaps, and zi tao looks up quickly from his textbook.  "good, quicker than last time."

zi tao rolls his eyes.  "wu fan ge, i need to study."

"then i'll question you later."  there's a brief silence.  "tao?"

"yeah, yeah."

lu han walks into the living room and gives wu fan a look that says something like, leave the poor kid alone and be quiet for once.  he grins as he announces, "they're on right now.  who wants to watch?"

yixing lies across wu fan's lap as the others crowd around the couch, with zi tao desperately taking notes during other performances on the floor, minseok and jongdae commenting on 4minute's new concept, and lu han talking softly into the receiver of his cell phone.  grinning, wu fan slides further down his seat and ruffles zi tao's hair, just to see the boy crane his neck and sniffle.

wu fan slips into zi tao's room later in the evening.  "good night, tao."  the younger boy opens his eyes, glares questioningly, and smiles.  good night, his lips say, and then he's out.

"tell sehun they were great today, and then get off the phone, your bill is ridiculous," wu fan says as he settles into his bed, and lu han splutters some garbled chinese and korean.  minseok laughs, and then everything falls silent to the soft rhythmic breathing of his roommates.

as wu fan turns, he imagines the starry borders of the universe behind his eyes.  oh, that's why, he vaguely thinks, before falling asleep with no doubt a stupid smile on his face.

hmm.  i tried to refuse tao entry into my heart but that didn't really work out.
i love leader/maknae relationships ok :(
