with only a ukelele and his high spirits in hand, chanyeol travels the seas.
a/n: wrote this in one sitting. my teacher keeps talking about the odyssey every five minutes in class and it's sort of amazing how she knows all those greek names off the top of her head like how. anyway. i'd recommend listening to the song linked! it's called aloha by standing egg.
aloha, aloha;
♪ chanyeol lives on a small island, and spends every day fishing and eating coconuts and singing songs on his ukelele.
one day, he decides to set off on an adventure.
on the sixth day, chanyeol finishes building his raft, which is propped up safely against saint augustus, his friend rock.
and on the seventh, he sleeps. all day. he doesn't even realize that a seagull decides to build a nest on his chest and stay the night before flying south. the little gift she leaves on him, though, is enough to express her thanks.
his pet crab, jolli, seems a bit upset to see him push the rickety raft onto the soft waves along the coast, if her razor sharp claws are anything to go by. but then again, chanyeol thinks, jolli pinches him everyday. so maybe she's been upset with him all this time. in that case, chanyeol feels bad.
"good bye, jolli," he says, majestically, and he bows to the sand. "thank you for everything."
jolli looks angry. chanyeol pushes off the shore before he can regret this.
chanyeol retunes his ukelele, because the salty ocean air and the nylon strings had gotten into a bit of a tizzy overnight, and his ukelele got so strung out, chanyeol had to intervene. "one day," chanyeol says to the fish he caught and put in his can, "i'm going to find a very calm ukelele, and hopefully he will allow me to play him without getting so angry every day."
the e string snaps. "oops." chanyeol quickly fixes it. "sorry there."
chanyeol finds a small little island and sleeps there for the night, under a blanket of bright stars that keep him cool and company.
the first person chanyeol meets on his trip is a distressed swallow settled uncomfortably atop a coconut tree. chanyeol sticks his oar onto the dim yellow sand and climbs onto shore.
"hello," he says. the bird squawks. "oh, wait." chanyeol takes out his ukelele and strums a simple chord. "there, do you understand me now?"
"goodness!" the swallow cries in a deeper voice than chanyeol had expected. "oh, goodness! can you help me there? i've gotten myself tangled in some loose coconut strings and can't seem to get out."
and so chanyeol helps the poor swallow, cradling him to his chest. "what's your name?"
"thank you. i'm su-hoo," says the bird. chanyeol looks quizzical. "you are?"
"chanyeol." chanyeol allows the bird to settle onto the palms of his hands. with two beats of his wings, su-hoo lifts off into the air, gliding gently on the sea breeze. "have a safe trip, su-hoo!"
the bird does not look back, but instead drops a small seed onto chanyeol's open hands, and flutters away towards the sun. chanyeol puts the seed into his ukelele and rows, until he runs into a green island of three foxes.
"hello," chanyeol says, "am i interrupting?"
a fox with a calm, copper coat picks its head up from the pile of stones it was constructing. it seems to smile, but chanyeol knows better than to trust foxes. his father had taught him that long ago. "oh, hello, what a pleasure to have you here."
"yes, you are interrupting," another fox interrupts, and upon closer inspection, the black stones are actually clams. the second fox has sleek black fur running down his back. "would you be so kind as to carry that pile of shells over here?"
"they're very pretty," chanyeol says, careful not to step on any of the foxes' valuable shells. a third fox scampers towards chanyeol, circles him, and then smiles sleepily. "hello there."
"hi." the third fox smiles. "i'm yixing."
"hello, yixing."
"and i'm wu fan."
"hello, wu fan."
"and i'm zi tao." the second fox points to another pile a couple of meters along the coast of the island. "can you get that, too, please?"
chanyeol does. he places it beside the other two piles. "well, i don't want to get in the way any longer," he says, "so i'll take my leave now."
yixing, whose sleepy eyes peer up at chanyeol, hands him a pearlescent shell. "thank you very much for your help." he squints. "chanyeol."
surprised, chanyeol almost drops the shell. "you can read!" he exclaims, but the foxes return to their work, and so chanyeol settles onto his raft and goes off again.
twice chanyeol almost loses his raft to small identical whirlpools. the first whirlpool quietly apologizes, and chanyeol tells him that it's all right. before he can row away, the whirlpool calls out in a sad, melancholic voice, "excuse me, if you see another whirlpool, can you tell him i say hello?"
the rest of his words die into bubbles, but chanyeol thinks he understands the garbling of the whirlpool, and so he smiles, nods, and rows on.
when chanyeol gets tangled in the second whirlpool, slightly larger, slightly angrier, chanyeol frantically paddles and exclaims, "hello!"
the whirlpool stops spinning and glowers. "hello."
"i just wanted to say," chanyeol says as he plucks at the strings of his ukelele, mimicking the simmering bubbles of the whirlpool, "that i had met another whirlpool, and he misses you greatly. i think he'd like you to find him."
quietly the whirlpool shrinks. "thank you," he says, "but i don't think i'll ever be able to see him again. if you do, can you please tell him that i am doing well, and that i hope he is, too?"
chanyeol smiles. the whirlpool disappears before he can reply. determined, chanyeol sails along the soft current that directs him to an island populated by one lone cave.
it is the first rocky island chanyeol has ever seen. carefully he climbs to the very top, where a dark, gaping cave overlooks the entire island. chanyeol plays an a chord and listens as it reverberates throughout the darkness, seemingly endless.
"who's there?" a voice calls out. "you're disrupting my sleep."
"sorry," says chanyeol. he peers deeper into the cave. "who's there?"
"what are you, an echo?" the voice sounds impatient. "i asked you first."
"my name's chanyeol."
"are you an antelope, chanyeol?"
chanyeol frowns. "no, i'm not."
"then you have no use here," the voice drawls, before falling into silence. chanyeol frowns again. "you're still not gone."
"who are you?"
the dark cave rumbles, and suddenly a dark panther paws his way out into the sun, yawning widely. "i'm kai. you're on my island."
chanyeol laughs. "sorry, kai. you're a very pretty panther. i'll let you get back to your sleep now."
kai rumbles satisfactorily before slinking back into his cave once more. as he climbs aboard his raft, chanyeol decides to tell his pet fish about the irritable panther, when suddenly he finds a blue sack of berries and leaves atop his ukelele, dusted with silver and grey powder. happy, chanyeol hums a tune and makes his way again.
one day, chanyeol is stricken with sickness and stays on an island for nearly three weeks. it's a sickness even his ukelele cannot heal, and when chanyeol wakes up on the tenth day from his tired slumber, he says, "ah, it's loneliness."
three clouds keep him company during his stay. they take pity and cover him when the sun gets too hot, and rain down whenever he needs more water. it's not the same, chanyeol thinks. the clouds do not hear him when he asks for their names, and roll away into the blue skies.
the seed su-hoo the swallow had given him begins to sprout on the fourteenth day. it is a fragile green sprout, and chanyeol thinks it's wonderful. with the last bit of strength he has, chanyeol plants the small sprout into a patch of brown soil, and hopes it will grow tall and large.
then chanyeol falls into a deep sleep.
when chanyeol opens his eyes, he sees a shadow cast over his raft. he sits up and calls out to the shadow, "hello?"
the shadow turns, and slowly chanyeol begins to realize that the shadow is of another person. the person sits on his raft and smiles.
"are you a human?" he asks. the understanding nod soothes the sickness deep in chanyeol's stomach. "thank goodness."
chanyeol spends a few more days on the island with the other human. they watch the green sprout, eat coconuts, and eventually chanyeol gains enough strength to run around the island and play songs on the ukelele for the other human. he gives the boy the pretty shell the three foxes had given him, and the boy blushes just as prettily.
chanyeol tells him stories about his adventure so far, about fables his mother taught him back home. in moments like these, chanyeol realizes how expressive the boy is, with his many smiles and many frowns and many tears. sometimes whenever the stars are bright chanyeol will talk for hours on, and he likes to imagine that it is his voice that soothes the boy to sleep. sometimes whenever the stars are bright, chanyeol wishes to kiss the boy on top of his head, on his cheeks, on his lips, but remembers that there are other places to go, and refrains.
on some days, when chanyeol and the boy are lying on the warm sand doing nothing, chanyeol wishes the boy would call his name.
"do you not have a voice?" the boy shakes his head sadly, and holds chanyeol's hand in his own warm hand. soft sparks dance across chanyeol's fingertips. "can i help?"
the boy frowns, and chanyeol seems to understand what he is saying through his eyes. your happiness. chanyeol glances down at the sprout which has grown two centimeters (measured by his broken e string), at the pile of empty coconut shells, at the boy's sad eyes.
on a dark night, chanyeol gives the boy his ukelele and feels the same tingling traces, from his ears to his toes. the boy clutches onto the ukelele tightly, opens his mouth, and softly says, "good bye."
the next morning, the boy is gone, and chanyeol settles into his raft, his sickness replaced by a dull emptiness at the pit of his heart.
for what seems like years, chanyeol does not know where he is going. he travels east, is blown away by gusts of denying wind to the south, to the north and west, until he is sure he has traveled the world in a complete circle.
two bubbling voices arise from underneath his raft.
"this way," the two voices say in unison. chanyeol smiles, as he knows something went right, and lets himself be drifted up up and away.
chanyeol finds himself back home.
no, he thinks to himself, this is not it.
chanyeol swims to shore, grabs his oar, and sails somewhere, determined.
two arms envelop him and noise fills his ears, before chanyeol realizes it is the sound of his name being carried by the warm, melodious tune of his ukelele.
"i'm sorry, i never got to thank you, please forgive me."
chanyeol laughs for the first time in what seems like centuries. "what's your name?"
"baekhyun."
"thank you, baekhyun," says chanyeol. he laughs. "thank you."
and then the two spend every day together, watching sunrises and sunsets, eating coconuts, whispering, singing songs, on their island, in eternal happiness.
