Genderswap query/discussion. I'm interested how people feel about referring to the character by their original physical gender vs their current one.
When I've used the latter it was in a story set some months after a permanent change and from another characters point of view, although it occurs to me I never mentioned or explained that so I don't know how people felt about it. Also in the case of characters who aren't aware of the person's original gender, obviously they are going to see them and think of the body they're in.
I generally feel that for short-term non-permanent genderswap situations the character would self-identify by their original gender, and so would others who know them, but I could more easily see their current gender being used in others point of view.
How do you all feel about this issue?
(Bit of discussion on one of the prompts in the safe meme and now I'm curious. It's kind of telling that I've written enough genderswap to have to think about this...)
Well... if I was suddenly transformed into a man, I think I would live the rest of my life thinking about myself as a woman. Gender identity is in your head, not your body, or at least that's what I've always thought. So that's how I write genderswapped characters. And I usually have the people who know them referring to them by the gender they were before the change (if that's how the genderswapped character sees themselves at least), the same way people who know transsexual people refer to them by the gender they identify as. If the genderswapped character starts behaving like the other gender and starts referring to themselves as whatever they got changed into, however, I'd make their friends refer to them like that as well.
As for people who don't know the character, they would simply see them as the gender they are at the moment. I've read a fanfic in which Zoro gets genderswapped and becomes pregnant, and there's a marine there who thinks he's just a pregnant woman (and develops a crush on him it seems, totally cute).
You don't think it's reasonable to write a character as acclimatising to and accepting the body that they're in over time, and accepting that even though that's not the gender they started out with, it's the body they're in now? Just sort of getting on with it with the hand they're dealt (particularly if it's someone like Zoro or Luffy, who are fairly bloody-minded) even if they didn't choose it. And others around them doing the same?
Most genderswap fic is just for kink/lulz and not permanent so it doesn't come up. But I don't think it's unreasonable. I think the other way is interesting too, an authorial choice, not "wrong" as far as I'm concerned.
I never said that my way is the only way and that any other way is wrong. It's just how I do it. I have a hard time imagining myself ever being able to actually feel like a man and think about myself as a man even if I ever did get a penis, because I feel very much like a woman and always have. Even if I did start referring to myself as a man around strangers to avoid confusion, in my head I would probably still be a woman. That's why I have some problems imagining others changing their gender identity according to their genitals, which also means that I have trouble writing it. As I said, I believe that gender identity is in the head, not in the body. After all, there's born women who feel 100% male even before/without going through surgery or hormone treatments

I was wondering: How many people on this meme are guys and how many are girls? I know the majority of fandom is female, but I know of at least on guy on this meme (I know him IRL), so I was wondering how many more there were? Just an idle ponder of mine.
I shall start the tally at one girl (me) and one guy (my friend, currently in france, unable to comment)
English is a shitty language that doesn't let you distinguish the gender of the speaker just by use of words, but considering how much yaoi prompts we have here... More girls for sure.
Yet I am an anon, I'm, according to statistic 52% woman and 48% man. Take your pick :D .
So then. Is there any music you relate to the prompts posted here? I know we've had at least two Song Based Prompts already ('The Stowaway' very early on in the meme and more recently there was 'This is Hardcore')
Anon here isn't making a meme based playlist...noooooooooooooooooooo >_>
Weeeeell... I'm not sure about specific prompts, but yesterday I was writing something for the meme with 'the circle of life' from the lion king and the gay version of 'I'm a barbie girl' stuck in my head... AT THE SAME TIME. (It was a very strange experience, but it seemed to fit.)
BARBIE IS A BITCH, SHE IS JUST A WITCH! IT'S THE CIIIIIIIRCLE OF LIIIIIIFE! AND IT MOVES US AAAAAAALL! I REALLY HATE HER WHY DOES KEN DATE HER?
XD XD Thats just....scary. Althuogh it does remind me that we've had 'Can you feel the Love tonight' and 'You can Fly!' in a Disney request. Not to mention Beauty and the Beast and Nightmare Before Christmas prompts...my playlist is filling fast! Huzzah!

Has this meme changed anyone else's mind on characters and pairings in a positive way, introducing you to things you now like but might never have considered otherwise?
This meme is wholly responsible for making me like Nami, and to a lesser degree Sanji (who I liked somewhat before), and there a few pairings I was barely aware of that I warmed to hugely after finding them on here as well and are now among my favourites, mainly Nami/Sanji, Luffy/Sanji and - okay, you're going to kick me for this, but RoCho. (Almost my first impression of the meme being "LMAO people pair the fluffy reindeer?!! And with the hottest woman on the crew?!!! I MUST TRY THAT!")
Anyway yes. Curious if anyone else has similar experiences, given that Nami is now one of my favourite characters and LuSan one of my favourite pairings.

FUZ (Franky/Usopp/Zoro). Can't explain it, it's just so adorkable. And my brain has somehow decided that Franky/Zoro is one of the hottest things ever (too bad nobody ever writes/draws it).
But sadly, the meme seems to have had mostly the opposite effect on me.

I've had a mix of likes and dislikes because of the meme, but fortunately, mostly likes.
I'm with you on the Nami thing. :D She became so much more awesome in my eyes. And although I've liked Sanji/Nami before, I've never written them (or het porn in general) until the meme came along. <3<3
Of course the meme would be nothing without crack. I now ship Iva/Duval and Bon/Luffyko/Iva. :DDD Now, all I need is some Inazuma and I'll be set. <3
