[ The basement apartment has been more useful than Ilsa ever wanted to know. [Tarvek's a doctor, in his own world, and Madboys and radiation are made for each other. Even though he didn't know Einsteinian physics when he arrived, he's learned enough -- even in non-spark mode -- to know what is happening.]

[Ilsa is dying. He's dying. Everyone here is dying.]

[He's mad as hell. Whatever Mayfield really is, underneath, on the surface it's a mess: empty drones; miserable, unhappy residents; squabbling staff...and, finally, so near as he can tell, a leader who was around the bend crazy.]

[He doesn't know if he and the rest will come back from this...or to what. he does know he's reached the end of his patience. This is a stupid waste of a great world-premise. He hunches over Ilsa's files, picking and poking, muttering over the sorry Smiths, the idiot events, the Postman...]

[When he's not studying, he's trying to help Ilsa. She's dying, and dying horribly.]

[He refuses to cry about it. She's got enough misery to deal with. Instead, he just silently helps.]

[ooeeooahah]

[ Ilsa is keeping watch as best she can. Tavek's work on the stairwell is fantastic. This is a good thing, because she is not sure she can throw her improvised spikes accurately anymore. ]

[ The thing is, the hordes have been down this road a few times, but there have been stretches of silence, when she could leave the basement and retrieve weapons thrown, and drag the bodies away. She hasn't had the strength to move the bodies today, though. ]

[ She's worried bout Nall, who's been sleeping most of the time, and shedding much more than the season warrants. ]

[ The burning knot of anger that Tarvek radiates, even to those who can't sense it, makes her upset. Mostly because his anger is directed at too many targets. ]

[ They haven't been talking, but there's not much left to say. Just the last things. ]

[He's probably strong enough to move the bodies, but he's unwilling to spend his strength on it. Those still alive here in the basement need too much, and Ilsa will keep trying to do it all.]

[He loves her. She's one of the dozens of sweet, sweet things Mayfield has given him. He hopes they both come back from death. If they don't...]

[He helps her clean the sores that are developing, then kisses her softly on the forehead.]
