*Nods*. I suppose this is why I can't and wouldn't want to see Johnny running to GLAAD for help for something like this. True, this is what GLAAD is for, but at the same time, every time discrimination is brought up as an issue on the table, individualism suffers a small blow, because it becomes necessary to reduce the parties involved to a label. It's needed because of the prejudice, but is still sad to see. :(

From what I know, the petition was started independently by the fans on facebook & his forum. At some point, they did consult / ask someone on the inside ( Tara, I think ) if it was okay and they were given a go. As part of an effort to get the petition out there, they contacted Outsports, GLAAD and some other media outlets to see if they would help to spread the petition. So the idea to contact GLAAD etc came from members of the message board.

TBH I couldnt' even read the comments to this article ( outside of ontd_skating, you guys are awesome. ) It's just...wow. Vitriolic haterades abound.

Thanks for confirming to me that... I picked up bits and pieces about the fans starting this and I couldn't find the source. Tara giving it a go was expected and a wise thing to do-in a way, this type of dirty laundry should be made known if someone outside of her and Johnny already knew about it. I just couldn't agree with the vision some readers of articles have tried to instill in me ... like Johnny went on his knees and begged GLAAD to force SOI to take him. He would have done that a long time ago if he was so desperate, and this kid, for all the flaws he has, is tough and proud ( ... )

Also some articles did not explain that the snubbing wasn't just for 2010 tour only. He'd never been invited from 2004-2010, so it wasn't an anomaly. I'm afraid casual readers aren't aware of this.

I think most people are not aware of the skating world's politics, which is reasonable. I only research and learn about it recently myself and am as fascinated by that as by Johnny, although the fascination for the former is more of a morbid, "I can't believe people would do that in the 21st century" type. I understand how Johnny could have put some readers off enough so that they wouldn't want to know anything else but what they had read, but I think the news sources should have included the quote I mentioned above because it's really the core theme of Johnny's response to the issue; he confirmed the family unfriendless but never associated it with homophobia to begin with-not that the association isn't there in reality; he just elects to take this as an individual and not a label that works for many people other than himself ( ... )

Why don't we replace all instances of flamboyant with fabulous?

I think we should do that. There can never be enough pretty and fabulousness in this world!!!!
(I got a nice haircut because Johnny has become my fabspiration. I want to look pretty too :) )

IA ABOUT "FLAMBOYANT". BECAUSE ANYTIME THE MEDIA USES IT'S LIKE THEY REALLY MEAN "FABULOUS" AND/OR "GAY" BUT CAN'T BRING THEMSELVES TO USE THOSE WORDS.

Yes, this is why there was the really funny but really sad "Euphemism for Johnny Weir" watch during February. Gay they cannot use because he hasn't said it himself, fabulous is subjective... but what about a simple "US figure skater, known for his artistic / lyrical intepretation of the programmes?"

DOESN'T SOUND AS GOOD AS "THE FLAMBOYANT JOHNNY WEIR~" AND GOOD HEADLINES >>>> ACCURACY OBVIOUSLY.

The only good thing that has come from this is that the title attracts non-skater people read the article.... I was talking about the Olympics with my friends and all that they had picked up regarding figure skating from the Games is 1) The Asian girl who won it was pretty and 2) there was this flamboyant guy with the rose crown who must be flaming ( ... )

It's weird bc I was a huge Aerosmith stan for years, and basically every article about them referred to Steven Tyler as their ~flamboyant frontman, so I didn't realise till getting interested in skating that apparently it was code for ghey most of the time, haha.

I'm glad the fans called attention to SOI's douchebaggery, and that the media got involved in a largely sympathetic way, but also glad that it wasn't Johnny who complained, if that makes sense.

Yes yes. That's exactly what I mean. I never like seeing discrimination being thrown out by anyone as the ONLY blame for things that don't go his/her way. Discrimination exists, that's for sure-and some people have it really bad (not Johnny)-but rarely anything is as simple as this ... I'd like to see introspection along with the blaming because no one is faultless and there're always different perspectives on one issue.
