It’s a time-honored technique of the gay community to hide the fact that a character is gay until the audience has developed a real affinity for him/her, then catch the audience off-guard by divulging that the character is gay.

Kind of like... real life?

Unless this dude's friends introduce every conversation with "Sorry, I'm gay, I apologize deeply, if that upsets you please don't talk to me". Although given he works for Breitbart, that's entirely likely.

I assume that that's what Breitbart wants, anyway. Fucker.

I know! I'm constantly fooled by meeting gay people who hide their evil agenda by being likeable! BASTARDS!

Well, I wasn't going to see Paranorman before, but now...

Anyone else? I believe in voting with my wallet, or at any rate my Unlimited card.

Hmm. That's a thought: I wonder if I buy several tickets to it with my Unlimited card, do they count towards attendance like a normal ticket would?

I'm not sure what an Unlimited card is, but I would assume so. At least I've always heard it in terms of ticket SALES, rather than actual head counts of attendance.

I just saw that yesterday and was torn between "yay! A gay character who is around for most of the film!" and "yup, a gay punchline."

It was a great movie. Haters can stay pressed. ♥

He was a dumb jock-- the movie deals pretty strongly in archetypal figures (on purpose, I'd say)-- that's constantly being hit on by the self-absorbed sister, so the "haha, he's gay!" punchline wasn't a surprise, really. But it was nice because he was still in the movie for much of the run-time, and it's not something I expected in a kid's flick. It's a trope I see mostly in adult movies, so even if it was just a joke, it's still pretty open for a mainstream kid's movie.

I don't like the idea that it's a punchline, but it seems to have been handled well other than that, so yay. :3

Parents might actually have to talk to their children after the movie?! Oh the humanity!

And you know, from what people are saying, it doesn't sound like kids would really get it anyway. (Disclaimer, I haven't seen the movie.)

None of the kids were the ones who reacted to that part when I saw it. I definitely think it went sailing right over their heads.

Actually, most of the kids in the theatre seemed really bored by about half-way in (yawning and fidgeting around and not even scared when I thought they would be). It's a great movie but the humor seems to be a bit too old/inaccessible for really young ones. It's subtle, with a lot of references.

You've made me even more excited to see it, honestly!
