In a recent episode of "Face to Face" with Bob Schieffer, former Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY)calls Rick Santorum "rigid and...homophobic" [at 4:40] and goes on to talk about how he's alarmed that Republicans are focusing on social issues:"I am convinced that if you get into these social issues and just stay in there about abortion and homosexuality

Simpson is super old school and represents a dead brand of Republicanism, though. This is the same guy who has said in the past that discussions of abortion and birth control don't concern men and they should stay out of it; he's right, but the kind of Republican who'd listen to him is long gone.

Back in my more conservative days, I started a Teen Age Republican group in my HS and Alan Simpson sent me a congratulations letter. He is close friends with a distant cousin of mine, who was a CT legislator from back in the 50s. I am saddened by what has become of the GOP, but Alan Simpson represents what my father and grandfather joined, plus he is extremely funny. He is pro-choice even into the third trimester, while I am now flexible even after that. I still consider myself a small-c conservative (I part my hair the same way my family has for seven generations), but I really feel uncomfortable with the current party.

My father is more of a fiscal conservative, and he was pretty indifferent to social issues. He'd probably be concerned about the crime wave that would result if abortion and contraception were outlawed.

Damn, a Wyoming Republican, even! Ouch. Somebody said Frothy's only kept around at this point to make Mittens look palatable, and I think there might be something to it, but it's backfiring.
