I can't watch the videos at work, but just reading the article it feels in poor taste to me but still hits hard as far as satire goes. Sometimes the painful part is knowing that there's someone out there nodding their head and agreeing with what is clearly meant to be sarcasm/satire.

The guys in the audience sound like they need to be smacked upside the head with a book on how not to be a douchebro. :|

I haven't watched it because I've seen several people say that the Sam Bee section is triggery. Victim blaming/dismissing is the only thing that really gets to me. Disappointed that the Daily Show would do this, tbh.

Victim blaming/dismissing is what the original clip was about; the segment was about calling that shit out.

She's doing parody on that type of thinking, an imitation of the dismissing attitude. Not by itself victim-blaming but about those who are. I'd advice not to watch it if you think you may be triggered.

The segment doesn't disgust me, the woman on Fox and the entire reason for it disgust me. Especially the notion that the response efforts are a waste of money. There are hardly any things set up for the service members who go through such a traumatic event as it is. I'm not sure if anyone here has ever seen or heard of the documentary called The Invisible War, but it really shows how big of a problem this is and how little justice and help is given to the people who go through this.

As for this being in poor taste? No, I don't think it is.

I agree. It's satire and it's makes a point. I am sad to think of anyone being triggered by it though.

Yeah, I'm sure that wasn't their intention with the segment, but to handle rape in any way on a show like The Daily Show is a hard thing to do. I think for what the show is and for how terrible what they are commenting on is, they did as best a job as they could.

Overall though, I'm glad they did the story even with the backlash it apparently caused. Military rape is sadly under-reported and I'm glad for anything that raises awareness of how often it happens and how terribly people treat the victims.

Yeah, I can actually think back to a number of problematic bits done on both The Daily Show and Colbert Report but overall have been satisfied with the topic being broached at all. It'd be nice if they'd just get it though.

If it had been on Fox News, I would have been horrified and disgusted. But because it's the Daily Show, and satire is basically what their correspondents do, I'm a little impressed with Sam Bee for nailing the way these people think without shooting everyone in the audience who didn't realize that she was being satirical.

...But there should be a little scrolling bar at the bottom of the screen that says WE'RE KIDDING. THIS ISN'T HOW WE REALLY FEEL. THIS IS SATIRE. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.

For me that's what made her segment especially biting satire. The part where she talked about the "roofie-tinis" and that men could either "protect her or rape her" was genius.

But I can also see how this segment could also upset a lot of people as well. I don't think TDS means any harm. They're trying to point out how utterly ridiculous this crap is.

This. Stewart and Colbert say a lot of things that would enrage me if someone else said it, but that's kind of what they're there for. Honestly, if I didn't laugh at some of these things I'd either cry or Hulk smash the world.

I felt like the segment was actually really good until about 1:40 seconds into the Sam Bee segment. Up until then, the satire was mainly about how, no matter what field they get into, women always have to worry about rape, sexual harassment, and disrespect. And the response is always a victim-blaming "Oh, well, you should have known better, going into a male-dominated occupation." After 1:40 though, the segment got dumb; they seemed to just stop with the satire and threw in stupid shit. I actually turned to a fellow viewer and said "Wait, where were they going with that ending?"

As for the catcalls, most of them sounded like women to me actually. That doesn't make the catcalling better or worse and it's kind of really dumb to do it during a segment about rape but I don't think the audience was the worst part of that segment by far.
