MUSLIMS will be banned from praying outdoors in France from today in the latest move by officials to remove Islam from the public sphere

Thanks a lot for explaining. That's really disappointing :/ I keep hearing about some EU agency (rightly) complaining about parts of the Swedish political/social system, so I assumed that they could actually do something about it
OK, it's one thing if you make a blanket ban on praying outside - if it is dogwhistle islamophobia to do so - but this is just plane flat-out islamaphobia when you blatantly single out Islam.
It would be very much in the spirit of true French laicité, but damn if they'd ever do it.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, FRANCE. i love your language and your art and your left-wing politics, but seriously, you have got to stop with the serious islamophobic attitude.
at least i have something to talk about in my french classes, now?
Out of interest, what part of their politics do you consider particularly left-wing? I can't claim to be an expert myself, so I wondered what you had in mind.
Back when I was in uni, DSK led what was a very strong socialist party, but obviously that's just...been discredited. As I recall, French anarchists are (lol) well-organised with a strong central core of ideals and ways to implement it. So when I say left-wing I mean...very very left wing.
French politicians use the country’s 1905 secularism law as reasoning why Muslims cannot be financially assisted by the government to build mosques. Right-wing mayors also allegedly refuse issuing construction permits to those who have the money.
And there's more...fatpie42September 16 2011, 08:24:31 UTC
“We didn't receive any letters. We negotiated with the Paris Govenor's Office before June. But we didn't know that the ban would be put into effect this soon,” Mohamed Salah Hamza said, adding that most Muslims in France still do not know that they are not supposed to pray on the street ahead of this week's Friday prayer. He underscored that Muslims do not want to pray on streets and have demanded larger mosques.
It's one thing to not use government money to pay for religious events/buildings (although they usually end up doing that in specific situations) because of laicity, but plain out refusing issuing construction permits is clearly discrimination on the basis of religious affiliation. I don't get why it's so difficult to understand for politicians. :/
