I teach 8th grade so I smiled at his excuse for not liking P.E. 8th grader are amazing people.

I may think the sign thing is out of line, but given the amount of parents I deal with who have clearly just given up on their children (including one last week who told me, "Well...he's in your fucking class isn't he? You handle it" when I called to report poor grades), I give her credit for clearly wanting her child to succeed and to get an education.

Because humiliating your kid will totally motivate him to try harder. But spanking? That's just wrong.

At my school we have to stand in front of our peers at the end of every quarter and give a 2 hour presentation on our use of time and our grades. It's a mandatory thing, and totally humiliating when you've just spent all of your time dicking around. You bet your your ASS it's motivating.

humiliation is actually a big motivator, i think. making classmates turn in papers and homework in front of everyone or reading an assignment out loud would produce very different results than say sliding it under a teacher's door.

If he is 15 and in 8th grade, was he held back or enrolled late? Maybe the lack of kids his age makes him apathetic? /arm chair psychology
