Better than the parents who don't give a shit, although the kid is already behind if he's 15 in 8th grade. Most 8th graders are 13.

Depending on where you live, of course. When I was in eighth grade, most students were turning 14 at some point over the school year, so of course you had the younger kids who skipped and the older kids who were held back.

*shrug* It sounds like she tried other ways and was at her wit's end. Desperate times and desperate measures, and all that. I can't get upset at that at all, and quite possibly because my mom did something similar to one of my foster sisters who got a one-day suspension: "No education means you end up stuck as nothing more than a cleaning lady somewhere, so you're gonna spend the whole day getting some hands-on practice cleaning this house top to bottom." This mother figures no education=standing on the street holding a sign, so here's your taste of it early, figure out which way you want the rest of your life to go.

I'm glad she really cares about her son's education but this...I dunno, if I was 15 and this happened to me, I'd probably literally die of embarrassment.

I feel like some poor black boy gets put on the news for having to do this by his "enraged mother" at least once per year.

Oh and my dad would tell me that he was going to drop me off at Skid Row if I ever came home with bad grades.
