Be clear about what happened to Keith Ellison

Feb 26, 2017 08:33

On the Monday after the 2016 election, Keith Ellison announced that he intended to run for DNC chair. At the time of his announcement, Ellison had the support of prominent establishment Democrats (Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer) and prominent left-wing Democrats (Bernie Sanders, Raúl Grijalva). He was the clear frontrunner. His challengers were mostly ( Read more... )

great article, OP. thanks for sharing!

i can't believe people are trying to say that ellison and perez are the same and that the fact that perez made ellison deputy chair is a big statement. it's such an empty gesture, especially after democrats actively fought so hard against ellison to prop up perez.

anyway, i'm done with the democratic party. if they keep refusing to push the party further left, i'll keep voting third party.

I don't think Perez is that bad in a vacuum, I am open to seeing if he does anything worthwhile. He is certainly much better than DWS, not that that's a high bar.

My problem is basically what the article outlined: that this race "didn't matter" but they shoehorned Perez into it just to push Ellison out, and used a bunch of dog whistle islamophobia to defeat him.

It's also undeniable that Perez is another sign that the people who just ran the party into the ground think the model is working. I'm surprised that the centrists freaking out the most about Trump are the most resistant to trying anything new to defeat him.

This was a really interesting read. Especially because I can see a lot of parallels between the Democrats, and the Labour party, which is the main opposition party in the UK. The current Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is very hard left and it seems like many party members are using every opportunity they can to sabotage him. For example, the members he appoints to his cabinet keep resigning because of pressure from the right-wing faction of the party. And they forced a second leader election only a couple of months after he won, but unfortunately for them, he won again. Labour are losing a lot of supporters because of this in-fighting. It looks petty to be squabbling when there are major issues such as Brexit and the collapsing healthcare system to worry about. I feel like the Democrats will lose some supporters now too because of this.

We're dealing with these exact same games in the California state party. Idk why they think they're gonna win. The future of their party is the left wing. Whether they give up power now or we have to wait them out, we're going left you guys.

(including primarying moderate Democrats).

Bitch where? The rightest of Dems are all in conservative states so you can't primary them with left-wing people unless you want to lose the seat entirely and there are no liberal states which are liberal enough for the left wing of this party who don't already have those left-wingers in power. Bitch where?

Anyway I think the shit with Ellison was disgusting. There are other ways of tanking someone without stoking Islamophobia.

ETA: (I'm not so sure I appreciate pretending that left-wingers don't have their own virulent racism to deal with or they idea that they haven't thrown any ideologies about the importance of race under the bus for the sake of influence in this very power struggle, like why am I supposed to trust any of these people)
