I feel pretty strongly that people should keep their cats indoors, just as dog owners should always keep their dogs leashed. I've never had a cat, but I've had LOADS of friends who have and the difference in their lifespan when indoor seems to be pretty remarkable. I had a friend who had like three cats vanish forever on her before she said enough and decided to have indoor cats from then on. They've all lived long, healthy lives.

And of course, every pet owner should have their pet spayed or neutered. I'm glad shelters make this a requirement.

I agree 100%. If you're going to let your cat outdoors, you should at least keep them in an enclosed area where they can't get hurt and can't kill anything themselves. I am so fucking annoyed by my neighbor's outdoor cats that always wander into my yard and shit in my vegetable garden and attack my little decrepit pug. And when I complain, their owner just shrugs and says you can't stop cats from wandering. YES YOU CAN. KEEP THEM IN YOUR GD HOUSE.

My boy Logan (see icon) and I agree: keep your damned cats indoors, people!

There is absolutely NO reason cats "need" to be outside, and there is plenty of research to substantiate the fact that indoor cats lead MUCH longer, healthier lives.

My two cats are strictly indoors. They are fixed and have all their claws. Yeah our couch paid the price but its just a couch. My kitties over all well being is my main concern. My mother-in-law, though, lets her cat go outside and he roams everywhere. I wish she didn't allow that!!!! I worry about that cat.

This just reminds me of my roommate's cats capturing birds and then deciding to bring them INSIDE to finish them off. They even had bells on their collars, and they still managed to catch a few.

Surprised this doesn't mention the Great Down Under. Cats have -devastated- the population bc Aussie animals have never had predators that can climb trees.

Exactly. I had to redone my cat because she was too old to move across the country but my parents were moving to an area that doesn't allow them. They're so dangerous here

Tangent, but I know two people who failed to spay their female cats. One was LOLing about them being in heat. Another one's girlfriend was furious with him for not spaying the cat.

Cat advocates view T/N/R programs as a humane alternative to euthanizing strays, and they argue that, because the returned cats can’t reproduce, the post-surgical colonies gradually shrink in number and disappear.

I am a cat lover, and I've never understood why T/N/R is touted as being more humane than simply euthanizing feral cats. It seems to me that they must live pretty shit lives, riddled with parasites, exposed to the elements, and constantly scrounging for food. The whole idea of euthanizing pets is that it's kinder than letting them suffer, right? So how is allowing ferals to continue living that way, just without being able to reproduce, humane?

I. Don't. Get. It.

It's more humane because the people supporting it can have a clean and morally superior conscience about not having to have killed or supported killing fluffy kitties.

In other words... it's not.
