I've noticed older people tend to especially not understand why they shouldn't ever let their cats outside. I've been fighting with my parents for yonks over this. I have lots of friends my age who refuse to let their cats outdoors for multiple reasons and their parents, as soon as they have their hands on a cat, let it roam free outside and then wonder why it rarely comes back.
And trying to explain this to people like my parents is like they're being personally offended, and then it just seems like they don't even LIKE their cats so wtf??
My grandma did that too. Her kitten got out. Then two miles down the road she heard something odd under the hood of her car. Turned out the kitten had hidden underneath her car and it had gotten wedged into her engine. Lucky the poor thing didn't die.
My neighbor back in El Paso also let their cat roam despite us telling her not to because it was coming into our backyard. With our dogs. Who have a high prey drive and were trained as guard dogs (my dad was VP at a major bank and we'd been robbed numerous times and held hostage once). She ignored us. Predictably the cat came into our backyard again and our dogs (two large Akitas) caught the cat and killed it. Devastated my parents to find that cat maimed by our dogs because my family loves animals and this was easily fucking preventable.
