Germans told to stockpile food and water for civil defence

a few friends of mine were planning to go to germany around the end of september but they canceled their bookings because they didn't feel safe going

Why don't they feel safe? It's just as safe as any place in Europe to my knowledge.

Because going to Oktoberfest is the only thing a person could possibly do in Germany. /facepalm

I'm active on other sites, and currently there are almost daily posts from (usually) Americans who think that they can't travel to Germany any more because rape gangs and terrorists and refugees (who are of course all criminals) are roaming the street and killing/raping everyone they see. Meanwhile, all the Germans in that online space go "WTF are you on about" - especially if you compare crime rates in Germany and the US.

lol no I've never had a supply kit. and, growing up in Florida, I've never even stocked up for a hurricane.

Really? Wow, I just have to deal with rain and snow storms every couple of years and I keep a case of water and far bit of can food. I couldn't imagine living in a place like that and not having a ton of stuff just in case.

yeah, idk. I guess it comes from a long childhood of being tossed into a panic and then it's just another damn storm. I'm in South Florida, our homes are pretty solidly prepared for it and our electrical grid too, it's not like it is in more northern areas, I guess. We get massive thunderstorms nearly every day in the summer, to me hurricanes are just like longer storms that make me sleepy (because the barometric pressure drops sharply). I can't tell you how many hurricanes I've slept through.

Now, when I was snowed in for a couple weeks living in Oregon and had to live on corner store poptarts, that was the only time I wish I'd stocked up. Hurricanes really don't faze me, the biggest worry is how long the power will be out because it's fucking hot down here.

I guess it really does come down to what you're used to but I am glad to hear your area is mostly safe from storms. and yes without fans mine would be not worth living right now

Oh, for crying out loud, not here tooSuch recommendations have existed for ages, they are in fact up on official websites, with stockpiles and everything. They've only realised that perhaps the things they thought would happen during the Cold War are not the same ones that might happen now. That's where that "for the first time since the Cold War" thing, that seems to have started in one single newspaper article comes from - it's the first full Civil defense concept since then, but government agencies concerned with reactions to natural catastrophes/whatever have advised to have supplies throughout that time

So they are normal and the German government does have them? That does make me feel better. it just sounded so weird for them not to I just had to post it so thank you for the better information.

They're now again making an up-to-date concept for civil defense as a whole, but that's not due to any indication that anything is going to happen right now. That update has also been planned for some years. By the time the last one was made, the thing that was on their mind was probably how our "friends" in the USA and USSR would have staged the first part of WWIII right here and thrown nuclear weapons at each other. Nowadays, the things that could happen are others including things that wouldn't have been possible in the Cold war, like cyber attacks on power plants and so on

Must have been a slow news say if updating stuff like that got so much focus. But yeah things have changed over the last 50 years and really it needed to be updated and maybe get the information out there more. A couple years back the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) did this whole Zombie survival kit ad campaign, really it was a basic survival kit but they used the popularity of zombies to get their message out. It was cool.

Other than the Franco-Prussian war I'm having a hard time remembering a war they won. They tied a few times but since becoming a Unified Germany (1800 unified) they haven't done well, mostly by biting off more then they can chew.
