When Mayte Lara Ibarra, the valedictorian of her high school’s graduating class, revealed her plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a scholarship, she did what any graduate would do: She shared her excitement on social media.

Ms. Ibarra also declared, proudly, that she is undocumented.

"I didn't think about deporting a child until I saw a living, breathing undocumented child state their status!" Congratulations on being a terrible human being?

Yeah, I had to read that twice... I actually thought she was going to say she was for deportation until she saw a living, breathing child and changed her mind. Silly me thinking she had a heart!

Yeah, it's disgusting. If that were my mother, I'd be horrified.

Isn't it dangerous to state that you're undocumented? Couldn't the government now decide to deport her, scholarship or not?

If they really wanted to, likely.

right? i'm proud of her and happy she's confident enough to openly talk about this but in this day and age people can report undocumented people online....

As long as her family paid all their state and federal taxes I really don't care one way or another.

Same. And anyone who buys stuff in the US pays taxes, and a lot of undocumented people *do* pay Federal tax. I could just seriously not care less about this issue, other than we need to stop deporting children and fix our immigration apparatus.

“State law also does not distinguish between documented and undocumented graduates of Texas high schools in admissions and financial aid decisions,” the statement said. “University policies reflect that law.”

I like this policy, but find it amazing and rather baffling for *Texas*. This hasn't been struck down?

People are probably going to complain about it now. "How dare you admit this valedictorian!!! She's taking the spot of my child with a 1.8 GPA!!!"

Right? Clueless asshats.

Reminds me of someone's story from another post about a guy complaining that affirmative action kept him from getting into Harvard... even though he hadn't even applied...

This is why I don't believe people when they say they just don't want the ~bad~ ones. This girl is exactly the type of person those people say they want.

And how are you going to blame a kid for being undocumented? Deporting a kid who has built a life here and will probably have an awesome future here makes no sense.

Yup. A child has no choice in where they're born, or raised, and should *never* be punished for the choices of their parents.
