WEST PLAINS, Mo. - From a hilltop west of this Ozarks town, trees stretch to the end of the world and only the low rumble of far-off thunder breaks the morning quiet.

That is about to change.

“On the command of ‘gun’!” the chief instructor calls out. “Two steps to the left, three shots on target! One standing, one kneeling, one standing ( Read more... )

Oh yes let's train them and forget that people are unpredictable fucks. How many times have police mistaken something in the hands of someone and shot them? Hell just look at this photo!

Precisely. Even most people who have firearms proficiency as a JOB REQUIREMENT have poorer accuracy and situational awareness than I'd want handling a weapon anywhere near my hypothetical kid. And, it's not that they're necessarily incompetent or don't take it seriously, but that training =/= reality and the stakes are so damn high.

Yes, all of this. My husband has been a military cop for the last five years, and the stories he tells me about these trained professionals and their gun mishaps... no thanks.

It just really frustrates me when it comes to guns. If I'm not asking if they failed civics class because they think the government can actually do an amendment to the bill of rights in this political climate that doesn't involve a pay raise to Congress, it's watching the people who come in with guns and shaking my head over them thinking they can protect us 'poor retail workers'. Sorry no. What you do DO is make the customer who was paranoid even more so and that irate customer into a violent customer because you may be shopping but pissed off guy sees someone in plain clothes start walking in their direction carrying a gun and suddenly the 'poor retail worker' is being screamed at for calling security and a bad situation just got worse since they don't know who the undercover security is. I don't even think an assassination would really shake these people anymore unless someone necromances up Ronald Reagan to do a successful one on him.

“Like air marshals on planes,” Martin said. “How many hijackings have we had since 9/11?”

Really? That's your argument? A cursory search on wikipedia reveals that there have actually been quite a few hijackings since 9/11.

Granted there have not been any that have resulted in the kind of events of 9/11, but it's not like that had happened before 9/11 either so...I'm not sure what his argument is.

People also seem to forget that before 9/11 the advice in a high jacking was to give them what they want. They would be negotiated with and you had a fairly good chance at being saved. What happened on 9-11 was unique.

Ever since then, every high jacking has had people stop the high hackers because they don't know if they're old style high hackers or 9/11 style high jackers. Even on 9/11 once the people on the last plane found out what was happening they did something.
