This is awesome news, and I was honestly SHOCKED. SHOCKED!

But the judge is absolutely correct, in that such bans violate citizens rights and no one has ever provided a legally sound, rational argument that allowing gay couples to marry harms society or straight couples.

COME ON, VIRGINIA.

If Utah can do it, surely you can become the 20-somethingth state to legalize it!

That is super surprising, if only because it was the Mormon church that pretty much effed up California's chances way back in the days of Prop 8.

The tide is turning, Hazzah!

maybe we can use the Michigan/Ohio rivalry to both of our advantages? ;) Get one of our states to pass it, and the other will be like OMG we can't let them show us up, now we have to pass it too!

There's an initiative to get it on the 2014 ballot to revoke our dumb constitutional amendment, but I'd really like to see it get struck down even before then.

The Mormon church's stance has softened considerably since it was one of the leading forces behind California's short-lived same-sex-marriage ban, Proposition 8, in 2008.

lol well isn't it nice you grew a half a conscience after completely fucking up my state you pieces of shit

also by whose definition are prop 8's effects "short-lived"?

prop 8 was overturned and the ban isn't in effect anymore. Sure, it took years, but in the grand scheme of things, that is short-lived.

so by the definition of people who are not gay and do not live in California then, as I suspected

Hey I lived in California and voted against prop 8. Just moved out of state in 2011. How exactly has the ban being overturned been bad for gay people in California?

As happy as I am about this, I feel like it won't last long. Some way or another, the state government will find a way to reverse this. Maybe I'm just a cynic but this is too good to be true to happen in (imo) the reddest state.

It's possible that the applicable Circuit Court of Appeals will issue an injunction against performing or recognizing Utah same-sex marriages while the state's appeal is decided, yes. Ultimately, what's going to settle this issue is a second gay marriage decision from the Supremes striking down state-level DoMAs and section 2 of the federal DoMA. Until then, appealing state laws is going to be unpredictable.

But it's also entirely possible that the Circuit Court is going to say "demonstrate the harm in allowing marriages while this is pending" and the state will have to suck it up.

It looks like the stay was rejected last night.
