So happy for Utah.

And "I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah. I am working with my legal counsel and the acting attorney general to determine the best course to defend traditional marriage within the borders of Utah," Gov. Gary Herbert said.

Yeah, how about fuck you, no. The will of the people means jack-shit when it comes to denying Constitutionally protected rights. See Loving v. Virginia for one. Did you not READ the decision? What if the will of the people were to deny the right to vote to women? Would never, ever happen.

f your church doesn't want to provide the sacrament of marriage to a gay couple, they don't have to. Has zippety-doo-da to do with the government issuing a license to marry.

What makes this even better is he has to conference with our ACTING attorney general because our actual attorney general is currently being indited for fraud. ;) Gotta love Utah, absolutely no shame.

The LDS Church came out against the ruling too, but that really isn't a surprise.

Yeah. Arguments like this make me laugh, because these people in the same breath will invoke the ~will of the founding fathers~ while being thoroughly ignorant that the founding fathers set up the government in a checks-and-balances system precisely to keep any one branch of government from running amok.

Not to mention their general disdain for "the mob" and fear of too much democracy.

Gay couples rushed to the Salt Lake County Clerk's office en masse to secure marriage licenses, waiting in line by the dozens and getting married on the spot by the mayor and ministers.
That is what jumped out at me. The tide has truly turned.

Salt Lake City is actually pretty liberal (especially by Utah standards). They've had a Democratic mayor since the 70s.

The parts of Salt Lake City that are not full of scary dogmatic Mormons are actually way, way cool and very not what most folks think of when you hear "capital of Utah". I was pleasantly surprised when I visited, having expected it to be... well... full of scary dogmatic Mormons.

As someone who lives in Utah, I was totally shocked by this but SO HAPPY.

It's amazing, too, because among people around my age (late 20s), I haven't heard a single person say they're upset by this, including Mormon friends. It's just the older generation who is holding out against it, it seems.
