He couldn't be worse.

I think the worst he'd do would be Dinkins 2.0 (ie, do nothing)

Definitely needs the "opinion piece" tag.

like a Dubai on the Hudson, only more environmentally friendly and pro-Israel.

Very striking metaphor, and it's right on the money (so to speak).

I hope de Blasio does better.

Bloomberg threw a lot of money at causes dear to the hearts of "liberals" in the runup to his last race to get their figleaf support (one of the few fond memories I have of his years in office is how desperately the asshole who planned the Republican convention Bloomberg paid for humiliated him with his epic fail at getting Caroline Kennedy into the Senate). Which is useful, really. You don't really get this many Sensible Centrists-for-pay outing themselves en masse like that ( ... )

Ugh. I spent the first week of September in Manhattan with my grandparents, who are giant Bloomberg stans. I was treated to constant rants about how Bloomberg is the best thing since sliced bread! He saved everyone and their second cousin from being shot on the street by young black men with illegal guns, and stop and frisk is fabulous and TOTALLY constitutional! NYC is going to hell in a handbasket now that he won't be mayor anymore!

Oddly, though, they loathed Giuliani and I've been subjected to several similar rants about how horrible and evil he was.
