On Thursday, Mr Barilla issued a statement to apologise, explaining that he was trying to say "simply that the woman plays a central role in a family".

Was he trying to defuse homophobia through sexism, because I assume the "central role" in a "traditional family" is cooking his pasta for her husband, right? Also, someone should inform him that there are homosexual couples with not one, but two women!

I actually think he was making the equally stupid assumption that there are no gay women, and that "gays" refers to two men.

That was my first thought. "Women can play a central role in many gay families..."

Barilla is shit anyway; I'm surprised to learn it's actually Italian because it's fucking awful. Easiest boycott ever.

Well then, it's a good thing I don't buy Barilla when I buy supermarket pasta anyway, isn't it? BOOOOOOOOOO Barilla! DeCecco or Ronzoni FTW!

Same here. As long as Ronzoni's execs don't say anything obnoxious, I'm good if I need box-pasta.
