My stepson went to Nature's Classroom on an overnight field trip a few years ago when he was in middle school in CT. I never remember hearing about anything like that going on there.

also that kids could opt out, bullshit. I am sure they were told that with words and then everything the adults said to them said "no, you will not." Most kids aren't going to stand up to an authority figure when their friends are all obeying.
My bet is that those children were told they were going to do some fun reenactment and when the name calling and threats began, they were too shocked and perhaps even too scared to say anything. It's hard to step out of something in the middle of it, especially when you're that young, because "you're ruining the fun for everybody else if you quit now and you said yes". The realisation how bad something is, sometimes even comes afterwards (like in that video posted below). Having the option to "opt out" does not excuse organising something like that.
