A disturbing letter targeting a teen with autism has shaken the boy's family and rallied the local community to their defense.

TW: ableist language, bullying. )

autism, flames on the side of my face, parents, bullying, *trigger warning: ableism, ableism, meanwhile in canada..., *trigger warning: bullying

That...Jesus.

My son is on the autism spectrum. I am so incredibly angry and offended by this letter. By the person or persons who wrote this letter.

I'm just. God. Speechless and stunned by someone's small-minded hatred.

I have a daughter who was recently diagnosed with autism and I'm with you. Though we had issues with our last neighbors and property manager because of our daughter, so this doesn't surprise me as much as I wish it would. Just makes me angry.

Oh, my god. I'm so sorry to hear you've dealt with crap. :(

I just don't get people, sometimes.

I'm personally not a dog person, but for the past two years I've had neighbors to the left and right of me (I'm in a townhouse, six units per building) that have dogs. Dogs that bark constantly, day and night. It's irritating, and I probably could have called our office and complained; possibly gotten them kicked out. But--why? To what end?

Same thing with people like the person who did the anon letter. What purpose does it serve to be like that? Or the people who gave you trouble? I just can't imagine being so without empathy or understanding.

I hope you have better neighbors now.

That's disgusting. I can't imagine what it's like to read such a horrible thing about your child. :( I hope Max is able to be kept away from all the media attention.

I don't doubt that it may be difficult to live next door to a family with an autistic child, but for the love of god, have a shred of empathy.

People like this need to remember they live in a society. We allow all sorts of people to live in neighbourhoods, just as we allow all sorts to go to the library.

I get complaints about children in the library. Like the half-deaf women talking are okay and the old men snoring are okay but if you're young, you're expected to be clicker trained to silence. People so want to judge but maybe it's Tourette's, maybe it's an intellectual disability, maybe it's no sleep and hunger.

The people who don't want to be around anyone unlike themselves need to either *never* leave their over-50 subdivision or go live in the bush.
