I think the big question would be if the information the cameras collect is used ethically and what oversights exist to make sure that material from the cameras that has no relationship to catching criminals is not leaked to the public. What I mean is, using the cameras to catch a robber makes sense to me. But what happens if someone is looking through the video and they find something that could be embarrassing but isn't actually illegal?

Last I heard, the UK had 20% of the world's CCTV cameras (and make up only 1% of the world's population). I wonder if the balance has shifted at all.

I love this story. It's clever and a non in-your-face way to make people notice. We passively go through the day and I'm sure don't notice half the cameras that are actually on us. Whether you agree or disagree with having the cameras isn't important in this piece, what's important is that we stay vigilant and don't turn into the blissfully ignorant.
