In a way I'd really rather exchange the bigotry and flaws of 'fiscal conservatism' as the GOP does it for the issues of these wackos. OTOH, what worries me is that on their own they might try to go somewhere and become even more insane without any kind of check on their lunacy, not that the RNC is very much of a check, albeit.

Yeah, okay. In our broken two-party system, where are they gonna go? Will they split the Republican base in half and all but guarantee a permanent Democrat majority?

Exactly. They're not going anywhere. This sort of posturing is for which way the platform tilts, not for any sort of real political split.

That's pretty much the only option on the table.

Although, I wonder - if the Republican party split in half, one side completely conservative and the other side socially moderate but fiscally conservative, the latter might be able to attract a lot of independents and even some Democrats.

I think the only reason they may wish to hang on to them is that those groups are their broadest voting base. The word goes out through these folks, through their congregations, through their followers, "vote for him/her." And they all do. Mindlessly, like lemmings.
Despite the fact that the Repubs are frantically looking for a way to swing back to the center, if they lose these folks, they lose the elections.

Not that that's a BAD thing, mind you.
