Yeah, okay. In our broken two-party system, where are they gonna go? Will they split the Republican base in half and all but guarantee a permanent Democrat majority?

Exactly. They're not going anywhere. This sort of posturing is for which way the platform tilts, not for any sort of real political split.

Although, I wonder - if the Republican party split in half, one side completely conservative and the other side socially moderate but fiscally conservative, the latter might be able to attract a lot of independents and even some Democrats.

Yes I wonder this as well. Maybe this is just my perception but I feel like the Democratic party has more of an ideological "range" than people imagine.

Yeah. I learned in AP US history that the democrats on a national level really only win when the conservatives are split (like they are right now), in part because the moderates go democrat based on social issues but would vote a straight republican ticket if only they weren't putting forward such cavemen candidates.

And in the decade+ since high school, that little bit of wisdom hasn't been wrong.
