Let's face it. If she had been unapologetically open about her past, they would be punishing her for that instead of supposedly being dishonest.

Also, "I think educators, police, firefighters and clergy should be held to a higher standard.” One of these things is not like the other.

no, I think she will have to legally change her name, though.

so much fucking hypocrisy.

Not only are you usually supposed to disclose previous aliases on job applications/during the interview process, but if you have a name change in a state like mine where most (if not all) court cases are publically available online, I'm not sure even that would do much good. Not to mention that she could still get heat for being "dishonest". It's really unfortunate.

Really? I know a lot of trans people (myself included) who don't disclose that sort of information, and I haven't heard of very many problems with that weren't related to them being trans (rather than them getting a name change). Is this just a thing in the teaching profession, or what?

Her past is none of their business and what she did was perfectly legal anyway. It does not make her a bad role model. I hope she fights the decision and wins.

This sucks. I'm sure if she hadn't "consistently lied" or whatever, they just would've fired her faster. Poor woman.

I'm also curious how things would have been handled had it been a man instead of a woman.

Dropped Dead Diva did an episode based on this where it was a male teacher, he got his job back. However in real life I think it would be more of the same except that they wouldn't use respect as justification for termination because who could ever respect a woman who had sex outside of marriage?

There was actually a case in Florida where the male teacher was fired, and so far, has not been able to get his job back.

But there's also a case in London where the male teacher was reinstated after his porn past came to light.

This just seems to me that women are held to a different standard than me. And that makes me angry.

Redemption? For what? Her previous job was perfectly legal. Why don't these self-righteous assholes shove a sharp stick in their scrotums.
