Glenn Beck announces plans for Independence, USA

Right-wing rabble-rouser Glenn Beck recently announced that he wanted to "go Galt" and create a self-sustaining community, inspired by the philosophy of Ayn Rand's character John Galt from "Atlas Shrugged."
The community will be known as Independence, USA. If and when it is completed, Independence will produce its own food and TV and film content. ( Read more... )

I'm OK with this.

I want all the Beck stans far away from the rest of us.

It has the decided advantage of taking them out of the general population and keeping them from polluting the wider US populace.

I'm sure that's what the people of Illinois and Ohio thought when Brigham Young led his followers away from them and out to the middle of Ute Indian territory. Little did they know that they'd be back and running for president.

(Sorry--been reading up on LDS history lately.)

True story, I live 10 minutes from Hill Cumorah. Shit gets crazy here every summer during the pageant.

Having them all in one place doesn't sound entirely terrible.

'deprogram them every summer'

Okay, that is *creepy*. I would hope an adult (person over 18) would eventually rebel against this sort of grotesquery.
*shudders*

Otherwise - go, Beck. You and your followers, go and find a nice hole somewhere to turn into your ideal little 'club'. And never, ever come out.

I think the big problem here is that 18 years though legally adult, isn't really fully mature yet. Eighteen year old kids still need and rely on their parents, not just for financial, but emotional support. It's really hard to cut those ties, esp. at that age, even when parents are openly abusive, let out when the abuse is hidden in 'doing what's best for you' crap like this.

I don't think that I am the only one who sees this going all Lord of the Flies, except with adults. It's a good thing that Beck is too incompetent to make this thing fly.

I think he may have enough money and influence to make it happen.
