Glenn Beck announces plans for Independence, USA

Right-wing rabble-rouser Glenn Beck recently announced that he wanted to "go Galt" and create a self-sustaining community, inspired by the philosophy of Ayn Rand's character John Galt from "Atlas Shrugged."
The community will be known as Independence, USA. If and when it is completed, Independence will produce its own food and TV and film content. ( Read more... )

It has the decided advantage of taking them out of the general population and keeping them from polluting the wider US populace.

I'm sure that's what the people of Illinois and Ohio thought when Brigham Young led his followers away from them and out to the middle of Ute Indian territory. Little did they know that they'd be back and running for president.

And I love how the LDS apologists at FAIR and FARMS are now claiming that the events in the BoM must have happened in an unknown location Central or South America (to explain away the evidence that it didn't happen where you live), and yet hordes of LDs faithful still flock to where you are.

That's also a disadvantage, though. Because there are people whose views will evolve and change over time, and that's a lot less likely if they're only exposed to like-minded people.

I used to be pretty conservative when I was in high school.
