I kind of want to print this out and slap my dad in the face with this.
Just heard him a few hours ago tell my Uncle that he has given up on politics because this election has shown that Americans just want "free stuff" and that Obama put 47 million people on welfare (like he personally signed them up, I guess? It surely can't be because the economy has been bad and people need help!) and soon mostly everyone will be on welfare and America is now a socialist country.
Idek, I shut the door so I didn't have to hear the bull.
My dad sent me this shitty article about how Obama won the election because Americans want "free stuff" ("How can you compete with that?!"). They're really hanging onto this narrative, aren't they?
Fuck "free stuff". I don't want "free stuff". In fact, just to show I'm not one of those, I want to work for the government in a public sector position for my entire career making sure these assholes who rant about how Americans are lazy and just want handouts have a country to live in.
sry for the rant.
eta: I have no problem with people who need government aid getting government aid, just saying I'd rather not take it so it's available for others who need it more, is all.
I'm reasonably sure that the sort of people who legit believe that everyone just wants "free stuff" also believe that your government salary IS "free stuff" because of course government workers don't actually work or anything. Clearly. Of course. Because all that Government just magically runs it's self, you know.
Well, he's talking about what the GOP expects to appeal to white males like himself. Reproductive rights issues don't even cross a lot of guys' minds...
Well, he does say As a Card-Carrying White Male I love expressing my opinion irrespective of whether people care to hear it. (I kind of wish all opinion pieces had disclaimers like this.)
The GOP probabaly won't listen - though if there's ever a possibility to get through to them I think it has to be now, when a lot of the party is realizing they need to do something differently if they want to make a comeback. And I think that has to come from people in their 'target audience' - the GOP doesn't care what I think they're doing wrong, because they've already decided they don't want me in their party. They'll never see that excluding everyone except financially comfortable 30+ christian white guys and their wives is a bad plan until those people explain why it isn't working.

Haven't read every word yet, but this is my favorite line so far.

The Republican perseveration on homosexuals as any sort of threat consigns them to history’s trough of intellectual pig dung.
