I kind of want to print this out and slap my dad in the face with this.

Just heard him a few hours ago tell my Uncle that he has given up on politics because this election has shown that Americans just want "free stuff" and that Obama put 47 million people on welfare (like he personally signed them up, I guess? It surely can't be because the economy has been bad and people need help!) and soon mostly everyone will be on welfare and America is now a socialist country.

Idek, I shut the door so I didn't have to hear the bull.

My dad sent me this shitty article about how Obama won the election because Americans want "free stuff" ("How can you compete with that?!"). They're really hanging onto this narrative, aren't they?

Fuck "free stuff". I don't want "free stuff". In fact, just to show I'm not one of those, I want to work for the government in a public sector position for my entire career making sure these assholes who rant about how Americans are lazy and just want handouts have a country to live in.

sry for the rant.

eta: I have no problem with people who need government aid getting government aid, just saying I'd rather not take it so it's available for others who need it more, is all.

I'm reasonably sure that the sort of people who legit believe that everyone just wants "free stuff" also believe that your government salary IS "free stuff" because of course government workers don't actually work or anything. Clearly. Of course. Because all that Government just magically runs it's self, you know.

They do. I'm told all the time that I don't have a "real job" (often by upper-class stay-at-home moms!) and am a taker, and don't pay taxes.

Aren't you a TEACHER? WTF?

I kind of want to form a Hell's Angels to fight anyone who insults teachers.

I used to occasionally get "well I'm a taxpayer so I pay your salary so you better do what I tell you" bs from parents.

Yeah it's pretty much made me confident that the party is never gonna change/improve if they have their heads so far up their asses they have stopped thinking critically.

I really wanna know what free stuff we are all getting tbh. Obamaphones (which is a thing I've only heard mentioned on right wing nutjob comments but they sound awesome)?

You can just tell him, "Why yes, we do expect basic human rights to be free and available to all."

Because that's the kind of "free" stuff I want--the things that are mine by right, because I am a conscious human person with certain inalienable rights.

We had this whole email debate (well sorta, I wound up just deleting a lot of it cause it was literally like copy past from some conservative pundit) and he was like "once you get out in the real world you will see" which I hate and tried to make the same point you did about having empathy for others. All just liberal b.s. that I've been brainwashed about apparently. If he hadn't sent me to public school I would believe differently, of course.

The kicker is that he is on disability himself and on medicare but when I try to point that out he just says he pays for his health insurance. I don't know much about medicare so I didn't bother arguing back but I'm pretty sure he would 1) either be paying way more if he couldn't get medicare and 2) wouldn't be able to afford to pay for anything without his disability check anyways.

Thank you!

Also, they act like people WANT to be on welfare. Whilst maybe 1% do, for the rest it sucks.

I'm on Centrelink in Australia and I hate the constant judgement that comes with it.

Hrm, that's actually a really good point. I've been fortunate enough to get things like Pell Grants and loans for college and all sorts of other scholarships that aren't exactly what you might think of as "free stuff" (i.e. welfare), it's still help from the government and something to be thankful for.

This is what many in the GOP do not compute. They don't see any correlation between your rich mommy and daddy paying for your life up to age 30 and people on welfare. It especially pisses me off because a lot of these families, but not all, have obtained their wealth by using every loop hole in the government.

You can really tell the difference in the people who truly appreciate what they have and those who will never appreciate it. Character is free.
