Oh here we go. This has been all the rage for the past few days here in Austin.

Just to add to the article and the possible outcomes of a ruling in favor of Fisher, UT Austin President Bill Powers released a statement this morning in which he said if SCOTUS were to rule in favor of Fisher, then the school would likely go to 100% Top 10% rule and the avenue which she tried to use to get into UT Austin would be slammed shut. So by suing the school, she's basically closing the door on anyone like her, who did not qualify for Top 10% but still want to be admitted into UT Austin under the holistic review admission.

Details here: http://blogs.utexas.edu/towertalk/2012/10/10/ut-at-supreme-court-today/

ETA: Ooops, the comment by Pres. Powers wasn't on the statement because it was something he said and was reported by someone on the Daily Texan staff. Don't think that article is up yet, got it from Twitter this morning/afternoon

Adding to this, aside from the fact she wasn't top 10%, her SAT scores were pretty average as well. There were probably 10,000 people ahead of her who weren't accepted - and most of them white too. Keep on baaaaaaawwing, Abigail.

That would be absolutely awful if they closed the door on those 25% of students who don't make the top 10%.

Having just finished applying to UT a few weeks ago (albeit as a transfer student), I can say their admissions process is rigorous and it's an extremely competitive school. I had a 3.38 GPA for my first years of college and that's still probably not enough to get me in--that's how intense it is.

Basically this sucks and it sounds like she was a mediocre student just really pissed off that she didn't get exactly what she wanted. SUCK IT UP, ABIGAIL.

I know how that is. I was a transfer student myself in '09 (from Austin Community College) and was actually rejected despite having a 4.0 GPA from ACC, because they pulled kind of a dick-ish move and averaged my 4.0 from ACC with the really abysmally crappy GPA I had from Vancouver way back in ~2001 which kinda killed everything, lol. Butttttttttttttt. I appealed and was accepted anyway!

tl;dr, don't be discouraged if you don't get in immediately, there are always avenues. Good luck!

This is not a generational thing, this is a privilege thing.

Yeah, mostly a privilege thing. But there is something about the already privileged people in my generation also feeling extremely entitled. Maybe it's in every generation, how should I know, but I do think it's rational considering what the commenters above replied.

Suck it up?

I mean, she's basically just assuming she didn't get in because she's white because a certain amount of spots are given to people of colour, other religious backgrounds, socio-economics etc. It could very well be she didn't get in because, sorry to her but w/e, she wasn't good enough.

As far as affirmative action is concerned, I really dug a quote from Real Time (I know, I know, but it's all that's on when I come home from the bar) where either Bill Maher or Kerry Washington said that the issue is like a 2000 m sprint where some runners are let to run while the others had to wait until three quarters of the way through. I think it's the appropriate action to take to level the playing field.

I'm in a business program right now, though, and I dread every political conversation because all they care about is money and they say shit like "ISN'T AFFIRMATIVE ACTION RACIST? YOU'RE A RACIST!".

(They also don't care about the environment if it means they're losing money. I'm not cut out for this program.)

That was my thought too.

A couple years ago, I got into an internet fight with some woman who insisted the only reason she hadn't gotten into the school she wanted to go to was because she wasn't black, and if she'd been black and had the exact same (B average) grades and test scores, she would have gotten in and blah blah blah.

Funny how she didn't like my response of "Well, maybe you should have studied harder."

Shouldn't you guys learn business-oriented ethics in your program? I think an ethical backbone is conducive to good profits since people tend to buy products if they think it is a good moral decision.

With that kind of "PROFIT GAIN ONLY" mentality, I can't help but feel like your classmates would make shitty businesspeople.

Or maybe good businesspeople but shitty people overall.

but it is worth noting that the advantages of being White, female and class mobile make certain fruits a little easier to grasp. Alas, these privileges are not enough for Fisher.

Am I misreading this? Because to me this is coming off as saying that there is some sort of privilege involved with being a woman, just like there is with being white or of being a higher economic status

Well,

I do know that white females are the biggest benefactors of affirmative action, which I'm sure she does not know. Don't know if that's what they're referring to in that sentence.

I actually don't think that's true wrt admissions or college scholarships. Do you have a citation for this?

No, that struck me as odd as well.
