This fall Matthew Heimbach, a student at the public university in the Baltimore suburbs proposed starting a white student union. His calls attracted immediate attention; with his cloudy but very emphatic views on race, he’s excellent at courting

Heimbach, who prefers being associated with southern nationalists over white nationalists, said a photo of him holding a Confederate flag this summer in front of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr. pastored in Montgomery, Alabama, ought not to be misconstrued. “[The Confederate flag] has never been a symbol of race,” Heimbach said. “Someone who has no connection to Dixie, no connection to the confederacy just doesn’t understand it.”

I do not understand white pride.

For centuries we enslaved and killed people because of our "superior white western culture", warped society on a global level to think that white is right, and continue to try to tell POC that racism is over and to get over themselves that we basically did and do everything in our power to hobble POC economically, socially, and intellectually so we can enjoy all the benefits of privilege. That is nothing to be proud about, and we deserve a lot worse than "white guilt."

Usually when people say they want a white student union, I say, "What do you have to talk about? It'll be the most boring group in the world." Sounds like this guy already has an idea, though.

It sounds like what this school really needs is a group where white people can discuss white privilege and what it means. Instead, they'll probably get this KKK bullshit.

Our school actually has a group called White Students Against White Privilege. It's got quite a few members actually, and they discuss ways to become more aware of their privilege, invite scholars and speakers that address the issues of racism and what they, as white people, can use their privilege to do (make things better).

Obviously, it's still a group of privileged white kids, and I've avoided the group simply because I'm skeptical. But at least it's something.
