Oh lawd, my mom thinks Czechoslovakia is a place too. (A frenemy of hers is Czech and is suing the Czech government for property confiscated from her family during the Communist period, so it comes up sometimes.) But when I pointed out to her that Czechoslovakia doesn't exist anymore she got super defensive about how old she is and how I shouldn't get on her case about everything.

FORTUNATELY my mother is not a politician and no one cares that her geography knowledge is super out of date.

I have worse stories about Americans' shitty knowledge of Eastern Europe though, cause I lived there for awhile and when people find out about it they ask me the stupidest things ever.

Oh man, post-soviet Czech property disputes are the worst. My Czech teacher has a cousin who's been in a constant lawsuit with another relative over who should get their family's old estate almost since the end of the Communist era.
