The only show I can think of that's as special and groundbreaking as Lost is Battlestar. The final BSG season was as polarizing as this season is, too.

"It really comes across as a piece of high literature rather than pulp fiction,"

it's my favorite show, but that statement is too much, even for a person like me who doesn't think novels should be considered the superior form of storytelling in our culture that everything else (movies, video games, comics, etc) should be compared to. Structure-wise, it's like a serial novel, but that's about it..

Yeah, I agree: I don't think novels should be the gold standard for quality. And I think there are times when Lost is among the best shows currently on television. But then other times...lol, Lost is cheesy, dorky, fanservicey pulp.

yeah. And I'm not saying pulp is the nadir either; it can get at emotions and situations that high quality stuff can rarely convey, a rawness or something

48 survivors have been whittled down to... 4. That's a lot of people dying/disappearing.

I think this article neglected to mention how LOST influenced other television shows, and increasing the serialized/mythlogical aspect of many shows. I mean, look at The Nine. Totally influenced by LOST. The title card has replaced the main opening credits. ER changed from the opening credits to just a title card in their last few seasons.

Or it didn't mention the influences of LOST. Without 24 and its format (serialized - each episode is an hour in a day!), I don't know if LOST would've been green-lighted. Or it didn't mention how LOST didn't dumb down stuff for audiences (...usually coughadamandeveflashbackcough), leading to more challenging shows across the networks. Plus the interactivity of the show, with online connections and message boards discussing the mysteries.

yeah, the influences are more important than some of the more pretentious things going on in the article

My sister was telling me the other day that once Lost ends, there will probably be a TON of books coming out about the ~philosophy~ of the show, kinda like what they did with Buffy and other such shows. I hope that happens.

I wonder what my next Lost will be... I find it so hard to get interested in shows lately.
