One thing I am confused about is after the whole submarine deaths, Darlton was like "Oh we did this so there was no question that the MIB was evil, we wanted the viewers to be against him, he needs to be stopped" (not verbatim obviously but you know). And then they give us this episode which made me incredibly sympathetic to the MIB. I don't even know what I am trying to say here but it was just a weird feeling to have after all the sadness of last week's episode.
I think they wanted us to know "he is the villain, you do not like him". But his source doesn't change what he's become. Like, Jeffrey Dahmer was a cute little kid once, but he still ate people.

Hm that's interesting. So you think the Smokey now is a mix of the old Smokey which always exisisted (or exsisted before Jacob and his brother came there) and Jacob's brother?

I think it's possible.
Like maybe Smokey needed a soul to be free and MIB provided that soul. But the soul has the memories and the personality, so know MIB is Smokey. But only because they fused or something.
Jacob's fake mom is the original Smokey? Just judging by the damage she did to the original otherton I'm guessing maybe so. There were a lot of reasons why I enjoyed this episode but most of all I'm intrigued by all of the questions it raised--whether they get answers or not, it's interesting to discuss and to think about and that's one of the main reasons why I like Lost so much.
As far as the light goes.. I think we've heard it described a few ways. Locke described it as the heart of the island and I believe it's what he saw when he looked into the Smoke monster for the first time. I think there are other points of light or 'energy' and we've seen that used in various ways on the island. I'm also trying to not get hung up on fake mom's description of the light because I want to believe that this is just her crazy old world way of explaining it and not necessarily akin to what the light really is, if that makes sense.
