That's rough. :/ Maybe the library could steer them to at least like, True Jackson books? She's a Disney-fied heroine but she is black, so that's something. Good YA for kids of color would probably be a whole 'nother post though.
When i watched it, i think the worst part for me was the story of Bangladeshi (i think, it was a while ago so i might be wrong) woman they followed who was desperate to make her skin lighter. She bought all these different over-the-counter bleaches and stuff that were practically toxic but she put them all on anyway, and in the end they didn't even help.
The program looked at the influence of Asian fashion/lifestyle magazines and it's insane how much internal discrimination there is within the Asian community- darker skinned people are basically bullied within their community, all the models on the covers of the magazines are light-skinned and they allow bleaching products to be advertised in them too. It's just so heartbreaking. The woman was so beautiful too, i wish she could have seen that she didn't need to change herself at all.
