channel 4 documentary - “i want to be white” (nsfw)
A friend linked me to this and she wrote:
ok, now, this is a 45 minute documentary and i wouldn’t expect any of you guys to stop tumbling (*clutches pearls*) just to watch this but you should definitely bookmark it and watch it when you get the chance. it talks about the rising popularity of deracialization surgery, and focuses on three individuals who are all trying to change themselves to be more “white” or “european.”
there’s an indian woman desperate to lighten her skin to the point of using illegal, toxic creams, an indian man whose had procedures to straighten his nose and square his jaw so he can make it as a model, and a afro-carribean woman who wants to change her “typical, black nose” to look more “white, or european.”
this black girl is the absolute worse. if you look up the term “self-hate” in a dictionary her ass will come up. it’s saddening that a grown ass woman would say half the things she says, equating the word “white” exclusively with ”good, smaller, wealthier.” yes, she even at one point says, “my black nose doesn’t fit in with my lifestyle. it’s a poor nose. with a white nose, i instantly feel richer and more wealthy.” one doctor, when asked about the whole thing, sees these surgeries as just a form of “globalization.” oh. lord-a-mercy.
i always say it but i’ll say it again, despite my many insecurities about my looks one thing i will always thank god for is the fact that i really, truly, and honestly have no issues with my dark skin tone, my kinky hair texture, or my ~typically african features~. thank you god.
but yeah, def worth a watch.
In the beginning there's some gross surgery stuff blech I was cringing but it's a good watch if not kind of infuriating and upsetting for very obvious reasons.
