Glastonbury 2010: I love Snoop Dogg the artist - but despise him as a man

Jun 28, 2010 10:13

Many of his songs are appallingly sexist. So why is feminist Julie Bindel such a fan of Snoop Dogg's music - and what did she make of his set ( Read more... )

Slash played on the main stage too, here are some Guns and Roses lyrics.

I see your sister in her Sunday dress
She's out to please
She pouts her best
She's out to take
No need to try
She's ready to make
It's so easy, easy
When everybody's tryin' to please me baby
It's so easy, easy
When everybody's tryin' to please me

Cars are crashin' every night
I drink n'drive everything's in sight
I make the fire
But I miss the firefight
I hit the bull's eye every night

It's so easy, easy
When everybody's tryin' to please me baby
Yeah it's so easy, easy
When everybody's tryin' to please me
So easy
But nothin' seems to please me
It all fits so right
When I fade into the night
See me hit you
You fall down

I see you standin' there
You think you're so cool
Why don't you just
Fuck off

Ya get nothin' for nothin'
If that's what ya do
Turn around bitch I got a use for you
Besides you ain't got nothin' better to do
And I'm bored

To say nothing of "I Used To Love Her (But I Had To Kill Her)"... I love that song, but it makes me really uncomfortable at the same time...

Well shit, "Jungle" makes me uncomfortable. And while we're talking about GNR songs, "You Could Be Mine" I used to really like because I've gotten irritated by guys who rejected me, but now I suspect that if I listen to the lyrics more carefully, I'm gonna be like, "Yikes, hold on, my only intent is to say 'Stupid boy you're a putz for rejecting me', I don't want to actually harm him"

Last time I saw Suicide Commando (goth band) play live they were using footage of holocaust victims as background images in their live show, which honestly disturbed me more than all the "ho-eing" I might have heard until that point.

And while we're on the subject of music and music industry, I'd like to link to this video:

Don't get me started on the use of holocaus imagery in goth, industrial and neofolk. I love a lot of the earlier artists that used such imagery, amongst other shocking imagery, as they were either obviously criticising it or were using it 'ambiguously' to make you think about the issues. It's turned into loads of artists either using it to shock in a completely unoriginal way, so it ends up numbing people instead of shocking them, or they're out and out far right-wingers like Troy Southgate who are basically infiltrating the scene to try to recruit people.

Holocaust imagery should always be shocking and disturbing, and if it gets to the point that it isn't, you're doing it wrong. Even if you're not far right, you're supporting it if you're contributing to the normalisation of such imagery.

THANK YOU. That was the point I was trying to make to people who didn't understand why I went outside and boycotted the rest of the show. It's one thing to have a song about how ideology makes you into drones and show thàt, and another thing when it's just a dumb dancefloor filler with holocaust images.

It really trivialises the message that artists like Throbbing Gristle were making when they used such imagery in the first place. There's a reason TG used lots of atrocity imagery (not just Nazis), but the projects that came out of TG (Psychic TV, Coil, Chris and Cosey) either didn't use them at all or not to that extent. Part of it was that it had become cliché, even by the early 80s, and it no longer had the power to shock.

This article is annoying, for reasons already stated.

But as for the OP's question, my "I know it's problematic, but I really enjoy it!" media is Glee. And classic rock. And Toy Story, given the article that was just posted here.

There are others, obvs - is there any form of media that isn't problematic in some way? - but those are the ones off the top of my head.
