In case you haven't heard, Eli Federman is the new disgrace of Lubavitch. Yes he is.

He is a horrible, evil moser who is also a selfish, attention-seeking, destructive self-hating Jew. He should leave Crown Heights and move far away and take his horrible modern and immodest family with him. He should do teshuva and beg forgiveness from the Rebbe ( Read more... )

what will become of us if women vote? The world as we know will come to an end. Soon those pesky women will want more. Maybe they'll even want to eat gebrokts on Pesach or something equally as horrible.

You should be so lucky.

Yes, I should. Maybe I should start my own campaign. Women for Gebrokts, I'll call it. But I think I need something a little more catchy. I'll work on it.

I am very curious about the what the Rebbe said on the matter. A few people seem to think he didn't want women to vote, other people said he never said that. Can anyone pull up a sicha or an address where the Rebbe talks about women voting?

The Rebbe probably established the rules many years ago and it was not even on anyone's radar that women might want to participate. Also federal gov moneys were probably not going to the CHJCC back then or at least not in such amounts.

Oy! So this is what happens when people go to law school! How dare he refer to logical argument and try to insist that religious restrictions on women when it comes to government-related services actually be based on real halacha!

Seriously, one of the strange and most ironic points that jumped out at me was how many of the commentators insisted that this was a religious issues for rabbinic authorities which should be kept far out of the secular sphere...even though from what I've heard, they serve as a liaison to the secular world and government programs.

Perhaps the real scandal is that government officials have totally cooperated with the existing structure, putting votes ahead of compliance with the Constitution. After all, rabbis are louder than divorced mothers and widows at election time....

What stood out for me is that he was considered an insider. He grew up there, as far as I know. And when an insider tries something "radical" like this, they automatically become an outsider.

I also don't know that this would be in violation of the first amendment. It is a sticky issue b/c one side will argue free exercise and the other will argue establishment clause.

You know more about US Constitutional issues and government programs than I do.

In Canada, discrimination on the basis of gender (or race or religion or any other similar grounds) is unconstitutional unless it's part of program to remedy the effects of discrimination. Is there anything similar in the US Constitution?

Also - what does the Crown Heights council get government funds for? Do they have a role in administering/distributing food stamps and social housing, or do they merely assist people in filling out paperwork? It was hard to tell from the website.

Are community councils common in other areas, or is this a Crown Heights creation?

Is funding such a council discretionary or required? Can the government legally say, "No, we are not willing to give funding to an organization that doesn't allow women to vote on its make-up".

Will discuss more on Friday or Sunday - need to get ready now.

but you are guilty of an equally great crime.
You say Mr. Federman is a disgrace and should be ashamed.
I read a NYT article that included not only Mr. Federman, but Mrs. Federman as well. Why aren't you mentioning her questionable repute for daring to allow her picture in a paper where people may see it?

(insert sarcasm)

OY, in that picture you can see her elbow showing! How can I even mention her name in public?
