Banned Balls

It's not only dirty words that can get your novel banned from school libraries. Apparently even technical terms for certain body parts are also a no-no. Words like: scrotum. Actually a pretty funny word when you think about it, right? Let's all say it together: "Scrotum, scrotum...sca-ROH-HO-HO-tuum ( Read more... )

awards, books, rants, censorship

"Scrotum, scrotum...sca-ROH-HO-HO-tuum...!" I know! They're probably worried about not being able to say it with a straight face. For a substitutable word, I nominate "filberts."

My kid has known what a scrotum is since she was about three or four. See, I didn't know I was supposed to be traumatized, so when she asked I just told her.

"You are such a scrotum!" used to be a familiar insult at work.

Now I'm remembering the Tim Allen routine where he compares the apparatus to elbow skin and then says something like, "There's not a woman alive who hasn't been frightened by the sight of her husband, naked and bent over the bathtub."

Hahahaha! Ok not a funny situation but the way you wrote out scrotum..hahaha. I can appreciate the situation these school librarians find themselves in though. So many parents get irate if they think youve exposed their precious darlings to something evil...like any mention of those parts between the waist and the upper legs :)

I am sorry to say this, but news like these tend to travel all the way over here: books being banned by librarians or schools or maybe even states (didn't that happen to Harry Potter?) in the US. I have never heard about it happening in any other Western country. What gives?

Who knows? Too many tight-asses in power, I guess.

Personally, I'd be honored. What great company I'd be in!
