Not quite gone, he's now "executive chairman of AMD and chair of the board of directors". It is nice having the guy who used to be in charge of my group CEO now.

Nah. In most companies, the CoB is just another board member. They don't really have any special powers. CEOs are frequently canned by sending them to the board where they're not paid and effectively get ignored by the rest of the members.
