LJ Idol Week 6: Step on a Crack

Apr 20, 2014 16:00

On the hundredth day of school I used to wear a bright red cape with 1-0-0 written on my shirt in duct tape. My class would count out 100 Cheerios and then ten kids would take off their shoes and count their toes. I suppose this was a time when I felt like a real superhero. ..I just didn’t know ( Read more... )

I'm sorry he fell through the crack. I like your interpretation of the topic! I also liked that you didn't stretch it out farther than it needed to go. You may be aware of the six word short story attributed to Hemingway -- "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

Thank you. Yes I am aware of the six word story and Hemingway's was brilliant.

I agree, although he has fallen out of favor, which is too bad. His short stories are outstanding.

That's so sad. When you wrote that his eyes were glazed, my immediate thought was "autism." My sister has Asperger's, so I've gotten to know glazed eyes.

I eventually got a followup, it takes time but eventually cumulative folders and important paperwork gets transferred school to school. Turns out some was coming my way...it's just hard for the system to keep up when kids change schools multiple times a year. Anyway he ended up in a separate setting, which I have mixed feelings about (but that's another issue entirely).

An unfortunate story that happens to a lot of kids - I know it happened to my sister. Her daughter is special-needs, and I thank the stars every day that things are different these days - that we can get help, that we could tell early on that she needed it. Thanks for sharing your story.

It really is quite common...and since I started teaching the frequency has been increasing. Each time its hard.

It's so hard to connect with and make head way when they move around so much. AW

And look how you posted this on the 110th day of 2014. Ten bonus Cheerios for you! And maybe another ten for disguising this poem as prose.
