There's something to be said for male characters who, if not actually bad, are morally ambiguous, or rebels, or dangerous yet somehow good. (Seriously, I could go on and on, but that's not what this is about.) He walks through the borderlands. If he's not one of the protagonists, they need him. Or maybe he's an antagonist who... is cool.
