Still reading but omg this opening.... Ever watched a romance K-drama were you felt like you suddenly lost the female lead halfway? Felt like her initially well-set up story fizzled out to the benefit of scenes of the male lead? Wished you could have seen a more developed exploration of her personal troubles?
YES. The absolute annihilation of this character because Korea was more focused on stupid trash can they bullied the writers into completely changing the script. I remember nearly dropping the drama because her character was so frustratingly mellowed out by mid-drama.
So apologies I don't have receipts. But I believe this drama fell under the umbrella of still being in production when the first episodes started airing (the whole drama wasn't filmed prior to airing). As a result, there was MASSIVE support for trash can's character when episodes were airing. Even leading up to the last episode, cast members still weren't sure who was the husband. that's why it felt like such a total switch at the end.
are you talking reply 1994? tbh i only truly liked 1997 and the rest, though having some cute moments, were disappointing to me but it's been a while since i watched them - i just remember them being too focused on the romance
I’m trying to remember bc it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched any k-dramas and this one came out some time ago, but I think Search: WWW was super focused on the female leads? I remember the men being secondary (maybe actually tertiary) after work/the relationship between the women themselves.
I do also love the two Rowoon dramas in here, Extraordinary You is one where I can rewatch whenever I’m in a slump. It’s so cute.
ETA: After posting I guess also I wasn’t sure if you would count Search: WWW more under the criteria of female friendships? But there is romance too so I guess could be both?
thank you 💕 i love extraordinary you too, it's so cute but like i say in the post it's such an excellent study on agency too, dano is such a great, admirable character!
i haven't watched search: www, i've heard some good and not so good things about the show. i chose these dramas because in my memory romance was an important part of the plot, but the criteria is quite ambiguous and subjective lmao so maybe it would work! but from the way you describe it, if the relationship between the women is central, then maybe friendship would suit it more :)
what a great post op, a very interesting and fun read! thank you for posting it <3
i haven't seen that many kdramas and i've only watched the king's affection of the ones you listed. i think i'll try some of these. My ID is Gangnam Beauty sounds very interesting to me, based on what you wrote.
my id is gangnam beauty is really great, and a college drama too, which we don't see very often in korean dramas! it made me rethink a lot about the pressure of beauty standards! together with extraordinary you and second 20s (also a college drama btw!), it's my favorite from this list i think
thank you 💕 i think with where the camellia blooms, i didn't fully understand dongbaek's character when i started it but really appreciated her more and more near the end. you describe her character really nicely :) the murder mystery point was so unnecessary, they should've left the show more in a hometown cha-cha-cha vibe (without the male lead trauma overtaking the story of course! hometown cha-cha-cha was also very guilty of this trope lol)
interesting that you mention doom at your service! i remember so little of the show despite having made the discussion posts here lmaooo but the way you summarize her character so emphatically i wished we could've seen more of this development in the drama. the drama's story became so convoluted and unclear to me that i kind of started to miss out on the humanity in the character. or the drama should've had 8 episodes instead of 16 (?)
