Tokyo - Days 1-3

6am start to finish packing and make the 12.25pm flight from Heathrow. Fortunately I'd managed to get an emergency exit seat, so the 12 hour flight was bearable. Arrived 9am local time. Got the train to Ueno without too much hassle, and managed to buy the equivalent of an Oyster card from a vending machine and 3 stops on the underground to the New Read more... )

a. almost nowhere takes credit cards and cash machines are scarce
b. its illegal to smoke in the street
c. the architecture is ...ramshackle. no two buildings are in the same style. and in residenial areas rarely at the same angle to the street. theprofusion of overhead power lines adds to the above and despite the japanese love of modern technology and new cars makes everywhere look a bit run down
d. you can buy hoy cans of coffee from vending machines at every street corner.
e. tube platform attendants dress like policemen
f. about one third of all people, and 100% f public employees, wear face masks in public.

Do you even eat fish? I thought you were a vegetarian. The idea that you walked through the night, in the rain, to a market where you couldn't even buy anything anyway has entertained me greatly. More stories please! xx
