Our First AKC Agility Trial!

Apr 05, 2009 09:46

Yesterday Faith and I went to our first ever AKC agility trial to try Novice Jumpers With Weaves!  We made three mistakes, so we did not qualify.  But they were all my fault (as per usual).

The trial site was pretty nice.  At first I couldn't find our ring!  There were two rings and they were in different buildings.  I easily found the  Standard ( Read more... )

Yeah, I was really happy that she was enthusiastic and not worried.

I care about qualifying...but I know the main thing is to learn and have fun, and we will get our Qs soon! Faith certainly doesn't care either way. :)

It sounds like it was a VERY good experience. And, while mistakes suck, it sounds like you can learn from them, yes?

Definitely! I will certainly make a point of not running into my dog in the future. (Still embarrassed about that....) Of course, it's nicer (I think) to be the cause of the NQ yourself instead of holes in your dog's training. People might think I am clumsy and slow, but at least they'll see that I have a good (albeit long-suffering) dog!

I really do now need that t-shirt I linked to awhile ago, which says the handler is the biggest obstacle on the course.

I agree that it's nice to be the reason you NQ, even if it's embarrassing.

pfft. you're not a sub-par handler- you're only just learning this game!

That's definitely true...but how come my poodle is learning so much faster than me?!

Coursemap! Coursemap! Coursemap! Coursemap!

I don't like the armband thing at AKC trials. I see no point to it, especially if the trial secretary already knows every exhibitor personally like the one here does.

Faith is tall enough to measure into 24?? Well, Poodles are springy so I hope she'll be okay.

I was going to try a NADAC trial in October, because I had nothing else to do then. >_>

They were handing out course maps and I forgot to get one!

Yes, I believe AKC has dogs over 22" jump 24", and Faith is 24". I am a little worried about that height because it seems like a lot. I thought about entering her in Preferred. Depending on the class, USDAA would have her jump 26"! Crazy. I think 20" is the right height. Of course, she routinely launches herself higher than that into the air, so maybe she disagrees.

NADAC is awesome! Misha would love it's no teeteriness.

I don't know what I'm talking about here, but this was fun to read! And you shouldn't be so hard on yourself - you can always do it again.

We will definitely try again soon, but I think our next trial will be NADAC. AKC trials are like twenty five bucks a pop! (That is for a grand total of thirty seconds in the ring plus complimentary collision with dog.) We'll do a couple more NADAC trials, and then we'll give AKC another shot.
